Deepavali
I remember Deepavali through my uncle’s cracker shop, my brother, childhood friends and evenings filled with smoke, noise and daring. Now I mostly watch the lights and long for a time when such small joys meant everything.

I was asleep. I don’t know where; whether it was in my dream or was it the birds really chirping outside my window. I woke up trying to recollect when I heard the sound of the birds chirping the last time. It was a long time ago probably in my childhood and that was long…
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende is a novel which spans four generations of the Del Valle family, starting from Nivea, to Clara, to Blanca and Alba. Taking us through momentous events in the history of the world and the country at the turn of the 20th century and afterwards, the novel chronicles…
Anne Bronte’s The Tenant of Wildfel Hall is unlike any novel that I have read so far. Not getting into the details of the story which was considered far too liberal or immoral for those times, I shall touch upon the power of the novel for presenting two remarkable characters in Mr. Arthur Huntingdon and…

More famously in ‘Paradise Lost’ Milton takes us directly to Satan ruminating and wallowing in Hell with his comrades. The…
A novel that I had wanted to read for a very long time; a story about the dictator Trujillo who ruled the Dominican Republic for 30 years. The novel is arranged as an episodic narrative tale which follows the events of the deadly, brutal regime from three points of view, that of Urania Cabral, the…
I remember a book by G.K.Chesterton that I had read in fragments. I couldn’t complete it because of the untidiness of the book and the small typeset that strained my eyes. I was extremely impressed by the small bits that I read. Chesterton describes his travels on horseback across the English country side. He is the most carefree traveler who lets place and time take care of all his needs.
This is going to be only about India and the victory at the Gabba. There are certain things in life which light up your mood, bring a smile to your face, give you a sense of joy which is not epicurean. One feels like living that moment for a long time, although it does not concern you directly; It is not about your personal fame or fortune. Yet it gives you something, adds more value to your life, enriches your experience as a follower, a spectator and eventually goes down into personal lore and collective folklore.
